Our take
The D508 is a presentation projector with an exact-model 2600 ANSI-lumen specification and a 4:3 SVGA panel. Its standard-throw lens and analog inputs can serve an older room, but the manual explicitly excludes HDMI and the 180 W lamp needs condition checks.
Legacy VGA or analog presentations in a room with conventional throw distance and a buyer able to inspect lamp condition.
It is not a modern HDMI-first or high-resolution movie projector, a battery device, or a close-wall installation; the absence of HDMI is a concrete source-compatibility limit.
Pros & cons
What could work for you, and what to consider before buying.
What works in its favor
- Vivitek identifies native SVGA 800 × 600 and lists 2600 ANSI lumens for the D508.
- A 1.92–2.14:1 throw ratio, manual zoom/focus, and 40–300 inch range support placement planning.
- VGA, composite, S-Video, audio inputs, and a filter-free DLP design suit a legacy presentation routine.
What to weigh up
- The D5 manual explicitly says HDMI is not available on D508, so a digital source needs a suitable conversion path.
- The native 4:3 SVGA image has limited detail for small type and widescreen video.
- The 180 W lamp has rated life but the manual cannot show remaining hours, brightness, or condition of a used example.

What the features mean for you
Does SVGA match the presentation material?
Vivitek lists native SVGA 800 × 600 in a 4:3 aspect ratio. That format can align naturally with older slide decks and VGA computer sources, but it provides less detail than XGA or WXGA and much less than Full HD. A widescreen movie or a detailed spreadsheet may be scaled into a shape and resolution that were not designed for modern fine text. The product accepts higher input formats, yet input compatibility does not create a higher native panel. Choose D508 when the actual content is simple enough for SVGA and the 4:3 frame is useful; choose a newer native format when detail is central.
What does the ANSI rating help compare?
Vivitek's legacy product page labels 2600 ANSI lumens for the D508. That named measurement gives a better basis for comparison than product sheets that say only lumens, although the number still describes the model rather than an old unit's current output. Screen size, room light, image mode, and lamp condition all affect visibility. The 180 W lamp is specified for about 3000 hours in standard mode and 4000 in economy. Ask about actual hours, inspect the image, and account for replacement-lamp availability. Do not convert the ANSI rating into a guarantee that a large screen will look bright in every room.
How much throw distance is required?
Vivitek provides a 1.92–2.14:1 throw ratio, 1.1:1 manual zoom/focus, and a 40–300 inch stated diagonal range. This is a conventional lens that needs significant distance for a wide image; it is not designed to sit against the screen wall. Measure the target width and lens position before choosing a ceiling mount. The manual zoom can fine-tune size within the available distance, while focus is manual. Vertical keystone correction is documented, but placement should be made as square as possible to preserve the image. The 4.2 lb chassis is relatively easy to move, but still requires AC power and room for ventilation.
Can it connect to today's sources?
Vivitek's product page lists VGA, composite video, S-Video, audio connections, and RS-232c. The D5-series manual says the D508/D509 connector differs: the RS-232C position is replaced by USB on those models. Treat that source difference carefully and inspect the unit's labels. The manual explicitly marks HDMI unavailable on D508 and D509, which matters if the room now relies on HDMI laptops, streaming sticks, or receivers. A buyer must verify a compatible active converter and supported input timing; a plug adapter alone may not convert digital video to analog. The 2 W mono speaker is basic, so larger meetings need a separate audio plan. Vivitek describes DLP as filter-free, reducing filter maintenance, but this does not remove lamp service needs.
Should you buy a used D508 for a fixed room?
The D508 can fit a presentation room that already uses VGA or analog video and has a long-enough throw. Vivitek calls it a presentation model and provides an ANSI figure, so its intended role and output basis are documented. The no-HDMI limit, 4:3 image, and finite lamp life remain central trade-offs. Inspect the exact label, lamp hours, focus uniformity, fan, remote, and analog ports; check any converter with the actual source. A model manual describes design facts, not the condition or accessories of a particular offer. A newer digital projector is easier when HDMI or built-in applications are required.
What else to compare
Choose a projector with native HDMI and a higher native panel resolution for current media; D508 is a better match for a compatible legacy VGA room.
Before you buy
Does the Vivitek D508 include HDMI?
No. Vivitek's D5-series manual marks HDMI unavailable on D508 and D509; the listed inputs are VGA and analog video.
Is the D508 brightness ANSI-rated?
Yes. Vivitek's exact D508 product page labels the 2600-lumen specification as ANSI lumens.
Does the 4000-hour lamp rating prove remaining life?
No. Vivitek lists up to 4000 hours in economy mode, but a particular used unit's hours and output must be checked.
