THE SHORT ANSWER

Our take

The PJ557D is a documented older presentation projector for a room that can use native XGA and its analog input panel. Its 2300 ANSI-lumen figure and 1.97–2.16 throw provide useful planning facts, but the exact used lamp, connectors, remote, and image need inspection.

Consider it for

A legacy presentation room that needs XGA, VGA or analog sources, and a measurable throw distance.

Look elsewhere if

It is not for native Full HD or 4K, HDMI-only equipment without adapters, battery use, close-wall placement, or streaming apps.

Pros & cons

What could work for you, and what to consider before buying.

What works in its favor

  • The ViewSonic sheet lists native XGA 1024 × 768 and 2300 maximum ANSI lumens.
  • A 1.97–2.16 throw ratio and 1.1× zoom support distance planning.
  • Dual 5 W speakers, vertical keystone, and color correction modes suit an older presentation room.

What to weigh up

  • Its 4:3 XGA panel has less native detail than WUXGA and Full HD models.
  • The listed panel is VGA, S-video, composite, optional component, USB-B, and control, not HDMI.
  • The 180 W lamp rating does not establish the remaining life of a used unit.

What the features mean for you

Does XGA match the room's presentation content?

ViewSonic specifies native XGA 1024 × 768 in a 4:3 format. That can fit older slide decks and computer sources that still use VGA or a squarer image, but it gives less detail than Full HD or WUXGA when fine text fills a large screen. A scaled input does not change the native panel. Review the presentations and screen proportions expected in the room before choosing this model. If the room is being updated for 16:9 video or dense spreadsheets, a higher-resolution projector may be the more suitable long-term choice.

What does the 2300 ANSI rating add?

The original ViewSonic datasheet states a maximum of 2300 ANSI lumens. This gives the PJ557D an explicitly named brightness basis that can be compared with other ANSI-rated projectors. It still describes a model specification, not the brightness of an older lamp or any particular listing. Lamp mode, lamp hours, screen size, and ambient light affect actual viewing. The 3500-hour normal and up-to-4000-hour Eco lamp figures are original rated life, not a remaining-life estimate. Ask for lamp hours and inspect the image rather than assuming a used unit performs like a new one.

Will the throw distance fit the screen?

ViewSonic lists a 1.97–2.16:1 throw ratio, a 1.1× manual zoom, and a 27.2–250-inch diagonal image range. That is conventional placement: the projector needs distance behind or in front of the audience rather than sitting close to the wall. Measure the lens-to-screen distance against the desired image width. The zoom gives limited sizing adjustment, while vertical keystone corrects geometry digitally; it is not optical lens shift. If the mounting point cannot land within the range, compare a different lens model instead of relying on keystone to solve the layout.

Are the inputs compatible with today's sources?

The manufacturer sheet lists two 15-pin RGB connectors, composite video, S-video, component video through an optional adapter, a mini-jack audio path, RS-232, and USB-B control. It does not list HDMI. An HDMI laptop or streaming device may therefore need an adapter or signal converter, and old analog connections should be checked for the room's exact equipment. The two 5 W speakers can cover basic presentation audio, but a larger meeting may need external sound. No built-in streaming platform is documented, so content must come from a connected device.

How does it compare with BenQ MS504A?

BenQ MS504A uses a native SVGA panel with a higher 3200-ANSI-lumen figure and an analog-oriented panel, while ViewSonic PJ557D uses native XGA with 2300 ANSI lumens. If image detail is the priority, XGA favors the ViewSonic; if the room's ANSI threshold matters more and lower resolution is acceptable, the BenQ may fit that path. Both are lamp-based legacy projectors that need source and lamp checks. Epson EX5220 is another native-XGA alternative with HDMI and wireless presentation support, but its color and white lumen figures are not ANSI. Compare real needs rather than a single bright-number ranking.

What else to compare

BenQ MS504A trades XGA detail for native SVGA and a 3200-ANSI rating; Epson EX5220 keeps native XGA with HDMI and wireless presentation options but uses non-ANSI color/white figures.
