Our take
Optoma UHD38 pairs a manufacturer-listed 4K UHD resolution with a high-refresh 1080p gaming mode and a stated 4000-ANSI-lumen rating. It suits a measured standard-throw room, but the lamp, fixed lens, and discontinued status make the exact unit and placement important.
A measured home room for UHD viewing or high-refresh 1080p gaming when fixed lens placement and lamp upkeep are acceptable.
It is not an ultra-short-throw or lens-shift installation projector, a built-in smart-app platform, or a guarantee of current stock; the sources describe model specifications rather than the condition of a used unit.
Pros & cons
What could work for you, and what to consider before buying.
What works in its favor
- Optoma lists UHD 3840 × 2160 and 4000 ANSI lumens on its model documentation.
- The specifications include up to 1080p at 240 Hz and 4.2 ms input lag for gaming sources.
- A 1.1× manual zoom and stated throw ratio give concrete room-planning information.
What to weigh up
- The lens has no vertical lens shift, so mount position and screen alignment need measuring.
- It is lamp-based, and lamp hours, color uniformity, and optical condition are unknown for a particular resale unit.
- Optoma marks the US page discontinued; that fact does not prove present stock, price, or offer identity.

What the features mean for you
What does Optoma document about 4K UHD?
Optoma's product page and specification material list UHD 3840 × 2160 resolution. This supports describing the model as 4K UHD output, but the checked documents do not establish a native 3840 × 2160 imaging device. Keep those claims distinct when comparing it with products whose sources explicitly say native 4K imaging. The UHD38 also accepts sources with different frame rates, so match the output mode to a console, PC, or movie source and verify the actual signal settings. A marketing 4K label alone does not describe the source signal or room result.
How do the brightness and gaming modes affect selection?
Optoma's European technical sheet states 4000 ANSI lumens, which is a labeled output basis useful for comparison. The US material identifies 1080p high-refresh support up to 240 Hz and a 4.2 ms input-lag figure. Those figures apply to their specified modes and do not mean a 4K signal runs at 240 Hz. Decide whether the room needs the UHD image or competitive high-refresh Full HD, then check the source, cable, and display settings together. The ANSI rating remains a model value, not a measurement of a used lamp's present output.
Will the lens fit the wall and screen?
The optical sheet gives a 1.5–1.66:1 throw ratio and 1.1× manual zoom. That is a conventional-throw range, so measure the lens-to-screen distance for the intended image width before mounting. The specification says there is no vertical lens shift. A keystone function can alter image geometry digitally, but it does not move the optical center and may reduce usable image detail. A low shelf or fixed ceiling plate therefore needs careful alignment. Buyers needing close-wall placement or flexible optical adjustment should compare a documented UST or lens-shift model instead.
What should I plan for with the lamp and inputs?
The spec sheet lists lamp life up to 4000 hours in Bright, 10000 in Eco, and 15000 in Dynamic mode. These are published estimates by mode, not remaining-life guarantees for a used projector. Check the hour counter and inspect the image for dimming, color changes, dust, and focus uniformity. The UHD38 has two HDMI 2.0 inputs and a built-in 10 W speaker; external HDMI sources can provide streaming apps, while the projector itself is not documented as an app platform. Confirm the required audio output and cable path for the exact setup.
Who should compare another home projector?
The UHD38 is attractive when a standard-throw room, UHD output, ANSI-listed brightness, and high-refresh 1080p mode all match the plan. BenQ TK850 is another 4K UHD output model with 3000 ANSI lumens and documented vertical lens shift; XGIMI AURA uses close-wall UST placement but its saved sources do not establish ANSI output. Those different paths change installation and measurement tradeoffs. The UHD38's discontinued product page does not prove that a live offer exists. Use a labeled model search, then verify the model plate, lamp hours, ports, and included accessories on any listing.
What else to compare
BenQ TK850 offers 4K UHD output, 3000 ANSI lumens, and vertical shift; XGIMI AURA offers documented UST placement with a different light-output basis.
Before you buy
Does the UHD38 have a 4K UHD resolution?
Optoma lists UHD 3840 × 2160. The checked documents do not establish a native 3840 × 2160 imaging device.
Is 4000 ANSI lumens an exact-unit measurement?
No. It is the model rating on Optoma's European sheet; a used projector's current brightness depends on its lamp and condition.
Can it sit right below the screen?
Its 1.5–1.66:1 ratio is conventional throw, and the optical sheet lists no vertical lens shift; measure the intended placement first.
