THE SHORT ANSWER

Our take

The NEC NP-ME401W is a fixed-room presentation projector for classrooms and meeting facilities where a documented 4,000 ANSI-lumen High Bright mode and a flexible conventional lens matter. Its native WXGA 1280 × 800 image is suited to slides rather than Full HD cinema. The 1.3–2.2:1 throw, manual 1.7× zoom, dual HDMI, VGA, and 20 W speaker give facilities teams practical installation and connection details.

Consider it for

A fixed classroom or meeting room that benefits from ANSI-rated output, a flexible conventional lens, and mixed HDMI/VGA equipment..

Look elsewhere if

It is not a native Full HD model, a wall-adjacent UST installation, an interactive pen projector on the evidence reviewed, or a lamp-free system.

Pros & cons

What could work for you, and what to consider before buying.

What works in its favor

  • Sharp's NEC datasheet identifies 4,000 ANSI lumens in High Bright mode and separate Normal and Eco output figures.
  • The 1.3–2.2:1 throw and manual 1.7× zoom can accommodate a range of conventional classroom distances.
  • Two HDMI inputs, VGA, network control, and a 20 W integrated speaker support common fixed-room presentations.

What to weigh up

  • Native WXGA 1280 × 800 has less detail than Full HD for video or very fine projected text.
  • The 240 W lamp is a wear item; the source does not establish remaining hours for a specific used projector.
  • Wireless sharing requires an optional Wi-Fi module, and the datasheet does not describe built-in streaming apps or interactive pens.

What the features mean for you

Does WXGA match the classroom content?

The datasheet specifies native 1280 × 800 WXGA on three LCD panels in a 16:10 format. That is a practical slide shape for many presentation layouts, with more vertical pixels than XGA but fewer than Full HD. Accepted 1080p input does not turn the projector into a 1080p panel. Use the expected text size, seating distance, and image diagonal to decide whether WXGA is enough. If fine photographic or movie detail is the priority, a native Full HD option is more suitable; if replacement compatibility matters, compare the room's existing mount and screen geometry.

What does the 4,000 ANSI rating mean?

The official datasheet calls the High Bright mode 4,000 ANSI lumens and separately lists 3,000 lumens in Normal and 2,400 in Eco. The latter mode figures are not all labeled ANSI in the table, so only the explicit High Bright claim is used for the comparable ANSI profile. A model rating is not a measure of today's lamp output. For a used unit, inspect its counter and image at the planned size and lighting. Brightness can help in a classroom, but screen surface, ambient light, and image mode still affect readability.

How much placement flexibility does the lens provide?

A 1.3–2.2:1 projection factor and a manual 1.7× optical zoom let the ME401W cover a useful range of conventional room layouts. The lens is not ultra-short-throw, so measure the screen size and projector-to-screen distance before ordering a replacement or mount. Zoom can fit a range without moving the projector, but it does not substitute for lens shift. The datasheet describes preserving the same footprint and lens position as NEC M-series models, which may matter when replacing classroom equipment. Confirm the exact room dimensions and mount before relying on that compatibility.

Will it work with the room's older and newer sources?

The datasheet lists two HDMI inputs, a VGA input and output, RCA video, stereo audio, LAN, and RS-232. That mix can connect a modern laptop alongside older installed equipment. A 20 W speaker reduces the need for a separate audio system in some rooms, though actual coverage depends on the room and audience. MultiPresenter enables wireless sharing for up to 16 devices only when the optional Wi-Fi module is selected; it is presentation networking, not a built-in video-streaming service. Verify the module and cables on a used offer.

What maintenance and interaction details remain unknown?

The ME401W uses a 240 W AC lamp, with manufacturer mode-based life ratings. Those figures help plan maintenance but cannot say how many hours remain in a secondhand unit. The saved datasheet identifies classroom and meeting roles, but does not establish interactive pen support. Do not treat an image on a whiteboard as evidence that the projector supports direct annotation. Ask for the lamp counter, test focus and inputs, and confirm whether any required wireless module or remote is included. The historical ASIN is not a verified direct purchase match.

What else to compare

Compare Epson PowerLite 1776W for a lighter portable presentation setup, or a native Full HD model for more image detail.

Before you buy

Is the ME401W native Full HD?

No. The official datasheet lists native WXGA 1280 × 800 resolution.

Is 4,000 ANSI lumens available in every mode?

The datasheet labels 4,000 ANSI lumens for High Bright; Normal and Eco have separate lower values.

Does it have built-in wireless apps?

No streaming platform is documented; wireless multi-device presenting requires an optional Wi-Fi module.
