Our take
The Lexmark T642 is a large monochrome print-only device aimed at a substantially heavier routine than a personal printer. Lexmark identifies the 20G0200 configuration, rates it up to 45 pages per minute on Letter, lists 600 sheets of standard input and recommends 3,000 to 19,000 pages per month. Duplex printing is available through an optional unit; buyers should not assume that the base candidate includes it. Lexmark describes Ethernet as standard, with USB and parallel listed among standard ports. This is a conditional legacy workgroup choice whose paper hardware, supplies, service path and actual condition deserve close inspection.
A legacy workgroup considering a high-volume wired printer that can be inspected and serviced locally..
It is not for a small desk, wireless-only setup, color or multifunction workflow, or a buyer who requires automatic duplex without checking an optional unit.
Pros & cons
What could work for you, and what to consider before buying.
What works in its favor
- The standard 600-sheet input and 45-ppm Letter rating are substantial for a single-function model.
- Lexmark's 3,000–19,000 monthly recommendation provides workload context for larger office queues.
- The U.S. product page maps the historical part clue 20G0200 to the exact T642.
What to weigh up
- The duplex unit is optional, so the standard base model should not be matched as automatic duplex.
- The product is discontinued and its actual maintenance state, parts supply and operating-system support are unknown.
- Its large size and paper capacity can be unnecessary overhead for light or home use.

What the features mean for you
A workgroup printer rather than a personal device
Lexmark's T642 specification describes a monochrome printer with a high rated output speed and a large standard paper arrangement. It is designed for shared document production rather than for occasional pages near a home computer. The 45-ppm rating and 600-sheet standard input make that distinction visible, but neither number guarantees how a particular old machine will perform. A buyer should first estimate the normal queue and look at room, electrical setup and service access. If copying and scanning are needed, this print-only model cannot replace an MFP.
Do not assume a duplexer is installed
Lexmark calls the duplex unit available, which means it is not established as included in the 20G0200 base configuration. Automatic two-sided printing may be a meaningful paper-saving feature for office reports, but the buyer must verify the accessory is present and works. This review therefore does not count the standard T642 configuration as automatic duplex. Ask for a photograph of the internal option label or an actual duplex sample if the feature is essential. A seller's use of the family name alone cannot prove that the additional hardware is fitted.
Large input capacity reduces frequent refills
The manufacturer lists a standard 500-sheet input tray plus a 100-sheet multipurpose feeder, for 600 sheets total. That is useful when several users share a queue or when longer jobs would otherwise require frequent attention. It also adds physical bulk and makes the printer less appealing for a tight desk or low monthly output. Optional drawers and other paper accessories can expand capacity, but they are not assumed here. Confirm exactly which trays come with a specific offer and whether they feed cleanly before counting on the advertised capacity.
Wired ports and model suffixes need checking
Lexmark's T642 page names USB and bidirectional parallel in the standard-port table and describes Ethernet as standard in its product information. It lists wireless print servers among optional network accessories, so built-in wireless is not established for the base 20G0200. The n suffix appears on separate T642n variants and should not be silently applied to a base T642. Verify the physical Ethernet port and exact configuration code on the chassis. The saved source establishes the intended model features, not which options a seller's old unit still contains.
The volume guidance is unusually high
Lexmark recommends 3,000 to 19,000 pages per month. That range makes the T642 a plausible candidate for a busy shared office, while a small personal routine may not use its strengths. Treat the recommendation as model-level planning guidance, not as a guarantee of lifespan, current durability or a target every month. The maximum duty-cycle figure is a separate upper stress metric. For a used printer, request service history, page count if available and a clear sample; a strong original specification cannot describe the remaining life of the fuser or rollers.
Assess lifecycle and installation costs before buying
A legacy high-capacity printer can require more attention than its page-per-minute headline suggests. Confirm a local source for toner and maintenance items, compatible drivers, the unit's power label, included trays and return terms. Ask whether Ethernet is physically present, whether the duplex accessory is installed, and whether the printer completes a feed test across each tray. This review makes no claim about current prices, availability or supply costs. The tagged Amazon link searches by the exact T642 part, leaving offer and condition verification to the buyer.
What else to compare
The Lexmark MS415dn includes standard automatic duplex in a smaller configuration; the HP P3015n is another wired mono enterprise printer with a lower stated volume range.
Before you buy
Does the base T642 include automatic duplex?
Lexmark describes a duplex unit as available, so its presence on an individual 20G0200 unit must be verified.
How much paper does the standard setup hold?
Lexmark lists a 500-sheet input tray and a 100-sheet multipurpose feeder, 600 sheets total.
What monthly use does Lexmark recommend?
The U.S. specification gives the T642 a recommended range of 3,000 to 19,000 pages per month.
Does it have built-in Wi-Fi?
No built-in Wi-Fi is documented for the base T642; Lexmark lists wireless print-server options separately.
