Our take
The HP LaserJet 4200 is a discontinued monochrome print-only printer whose base configuration should be kept separate from the 4200n, 4200tn and 4200dtn. HP maps product Q2425A to the base model and lists a 100-sheet multipurpose tray plus a 500-sheet tray, for 600 sheets of standard input. Its standard interface is parallel; Ethernet and automatic duplex depend on optional hardware and are not included as base features. HP gives a maximum duty-cycle ceiling but no recommended monthly range, so the ceiling is not used as ordinary workload guidance.
A legacy monochrome printer for a compatible parallel-connected workstation that needs a substantial standard paper supply but not built-in networking or automatic duplex..
Skip it if you need color, copy or scan tasks, automatic duplex as standard, built-in network ports, Wi-Fi or current model support.
Pros & cons
What could work for you, and what to consider before buying.
What works in its favor
- The base configuration has 600 sheets of standard paper input, more than a compact desk printer.
- HP maps Q2425A to the exact base 4200, helping distinguish it from network and duplex suffixes.
- A 100-sheet multipurpose tray sits alongside the 500-sheet regular tray.
What to weigh up
- Standard connectivity is parallel; Ethernet depends on an optional Jetdirect print server.
- Automatic duplex is standard only on other documented family configurations, not this base model.
- The maximum duty cycle is not a recommended workload, and no monthly range is stated.

Full review: how the features affect your choice
What the features mean for you
Keep the base 4200 distinct from network suffixes
HP's U.S. product page maps Q2425A#ABA to the base LaserJet 4200. The family specification sheet lists separate 4200n, 4200tn and 4200dtn configurations, with network and duplex equipment varying among them. This base record should not inherit the n model's Jetdirect card or a dtn model's duplexer. The exact suffix and product number are especially important on a used printer because marketplace titles often shorten the name to 4200. Request a label photo and compare it with HP's model table before relying on accessory details.
A 600-sheet standard paper supply
HP lists a 100-sheet multipurpose tray and a 500-sheet tray as the base model's standard input. That gives a 600-sheet supply and a separate route for special media. The optional high-capacity feeder or second tray should not be assumed to be included in a listing. A large supply can reduce refill interruptions in a shared queue, but it does not establish a recommended monthly page count. Check that both standard trays, feed guides and output components are present and that the specific unit can handle the paper sizes the office uses.
Automatic duplex is not standard on the base model
HP's family specification identifies standard automatic duplex for the dtn and dtnsl configurations. The base 4200 has no d suffix and does not include that standard duplex package; the duplex unit is an accessory. A buyer should not select the base model for an automatic-two-sided requirement unless the listing proves the correct optional unit is installed and working. A software menu or a seller's generic statement is not enough to confirm hardware. For routine double-sided reports, a configuration with duplex documented as standard is easier to assess.
Parallel is standard and Ethernet is optional
HP lists an IEEE 1284 parallel interface for the base model. Jetdirect Ethernet print servers are optional cards, not standard built-in networking on the Q2425A configuration. Wireless is also not a base feature in the checked specifications. This connection layout may still work for a legacy workstation or an office with an appropriate print server, but it is not plug-and-play network hardware for every current setup. Confirm the actual port card, cable and computer driver path before purchase, and do not assume parts are included because another 4200 suffix had them.
Use the maximum duty-cycle number carefully
HP lists up to 150,000 pages per month as a maximum duty-cycle figure for the 4200 series. It is not a recommended monthly volume and does not say that a used device should routinely print near that ceiling. The model sheet and user guide report different rated speed figures, so this review avoids using speed to rank the base device. The safer buying questions are the product label, print sample, page count, fuser and feed condition, tray contents, service history and software fit. The source documents an old product configuration, not today's price or available supply.
Compare for your needs

Before you buy
Does the base LaserJet 4200 include Ethernet?
No. HP lists parallel as standard; Ethernet requires an optional Jetdirect print-server card on the base model.
Does the base model include automatic duplex?
HP's family table lists standard duplex for dtn and dtnsl models, not the base Q2425A configuration.
How much standard paper input does the base 4200 have?
HP lists a 100-sheet multipurpose tray plus a 500-sheet tray, for 600 sheets standard.
What workload range does HP recommend?
The reviewed HP sources state a maximum duty cycle but do not provide a recommended monthly range for this profile.
