Our take
The HP LaserJet 1200 is a legacy mono printer for basic direct-connected output. HP lists up to 15 pages per minute on Letter, manual duplex, a 250-sheet main tray and USB and parallel interfaces. It should not be confused with the LaserJet 1220 multifunction model: the 1200 is print-only. The saved guide distinguishes a 1,000-page average usage figure from a 10,000-page maximum monthly duty cycle, neither of which should be repackaged as a modern recommended-volume range. HP marks the model discontinued, making software, toner and individual unit condition important checks.
A buyer with a compatible computer who wants simple monochrome pages and is prepared to verify software, supplies and used-unit condition..
It is a poor fit for buyers who require automatic duplex, Wi-Fi or Ethernet sharing, color, scanning, or a current support path without compatibility checks.
Pros & cons
What could work for you, and what to consider before buying.
What works in its favor
- HP documents USB and parallel interfaces for the exact LaserJet 1200.
- Manual duplex is available for users willing to handle paper between sides.
- The 250-sheet main tray is a useful reserve for a simple older printer.
What to weigh up
- The 15 ppm Letter rating is modest for a shared workgroup queue.
- HP marks the model discontinued, and present toner, driver and parts support is unknown.
- The 1,000-page average usage figure is not a recommended monthly-volume range.

What the features mean for you
A simple printer-only role
The LaserJet 1200 is built for monochrome pages rather than an all-in-one office workflow. HP's user guide describes printing at up to 15 pages per minute on Letter and 14 on A4. Copying and scanning are not part of this model; those functions belong to the separate LaserJet 1220 MFP. This distinction is worth checking because historical listings can combine related models and photographs. A buyer who mainly prints text from one workstation may find the function set straightforward, while an office that needs paper capture should shortlist a separate exact-model MFP.
Manual duplex asks the user to handle the stack
HP documents manual two-sided printing. The printer does not automatically turn every sheet for a duplex job, so the user must follow the driver and guide instructions, retrieve and reinsert pages in the correct orientation, then check the output. That can be acceptable for occasional short documents; it becomes tedious for repeated packets or long reports. If automatic duplex is essential, this model should not pass the hard requirement. The capability is also separate from scanning: there is no document feeder or scanner in the LaserJet 1200 to capture both sides of originals.
Paper capacity and interfaces show its age and role
The guide lists a 250-sheet main input tray, a 10-sheet priority feed and a 125-sheet output capacity. USB and parallel ports offer direct connection choices, including compatibility with some older workstation environments. The saved exact-model sources do not document built-in wireless or Ethernet. A parallel connector is not automatically useful on a current computer, so confirm operating-system drivers, cables and the intended host before buying. Tray capacities describe the designed printer, not the condition of the included parts; inspect the paper feed, pickup rollers and output path on an older device.
Do not turn usage and duty figures into a recommendation
HP's user guide lists an average usage figure of 1,000 pages and a maximum monthly duty cycle of 10,000 pages. These measurements have different meanings. The maximum is a ceiling, not a recommended routine workload, and the average usage figure is not presented in the saved packet as a comparable recommended monthly range. I leave the matcher's recommended minimum and maximum unknown. The 250-sheet tray and 15 ppm rating also cannot substitute for a workload recommendation. If monthly volume is central to the purchase, choose a printer with an explicit range for that decision.
A discontinued model needs a compatibility plan
HP marks the LaserJet 1200 discontinued. The old product page and manual establish its original features but not whether a seller's unit has usable toner, a working feed path or a supported software path on the buyer's computer. Ask for the exact C7044A product label, sample output, remaining toner details, cable inclusion and return conditions. No exact Amazon ASIN association is established by the saved packet, so this listing uses a tagged model search. Compare the total effort of maintaining the printer with a newer device before deciding that a low used price is a good long-term fit.
Choose it for compatibility, not nostalgia
The LaserJet 1200 can make sense when monochrome print-only output, manual duplex and legacy ports match a known workstation. It is not an automatic choice for a home office simply because its specification sheet is familiar. If more than one user needs network access, if two-sided output is routine, or if current drivers and supplies are required, the age becomes a material trade-off. Verify the exact model, a test page, the software path and consumables. A newer mono printer may be a better fit even if this machine's durable design once made it a common office choice.
What else to compare
Compare the HP M426fdw if you need a mono copier, scanner and fax with automatic duplex, or the Brother HL-L6200DW for a faster networked print-only role.
Before you buy
Does the LaserJet 1200 have automatic duplex?
No. HP's guide describes manual two-sided printing, which requires the user to handle the pages between sides.
Can this model copy or scan?
No. The LaserJet 1200 is print-only; the LaserJet 1220 is a separate multifunction model.
Is 10,000 pages the recommended monthly amount?
No. HP labels that figure a maximum monthly duty cycle; the saved sources do not provide a comparable recommended range.
