Our take
The Aegis Padlock DT FIPS 6TB is a specialized powered-desktop drive for someone who needs a large HDD and has a concrete reason to use this FIPS-listed configuration. Apricorn documents keypad access and hardware encryption inside the drive rather than relying on host software for those functions. The trade-offs are an external 12V supply, PIN administration, and a connector discrepancy between the manufacturer datasheet and a retailer page. It is not a universal security upgrade for every external-drive buyer.
A powered-desk option for someone who needs 6TB and has a concrete reason to use this FIPS-listed configuration. It is a poor fit for a no-outlet setup, and FIPS should not drive the decision unless the buyer's policy actually calls for it..
Buyers who need bus power, require a verified current Amazon offer or current host-specific certification, or do not have a real FIPS policy need and prefer a simpler general-purpose drive.
Pros & cons
What could work for you, and what to consider before buying.
What works in its favor
- Apricorn maps the exact ADT-3PL256F-6000 SKU to its 6TB FIPS HDD family.
- Device-side AES-XTS 256-bit encryption and keypad/PIN authentication are documented.
- USB 3.2 Gen 1 and backward compatibility with USB 1/2 are listed by the manufacturer.
What to weigh up
- A separate 12V AC adapter is required, so it does not meet a no-outlet requirement.
- Apricorn and B&H disagree on Type-A versus Type-B connector wording.
- PIN enrollment and recovery need planning; current offer, package, condition, and host compatibility remain unverified.

Full review: how the features affect your choice
What the features mean for you
Is 6TB the right capacity for the job?
Apricorn's datasheet lists the exact ADT-3PL256F-6000 in its FIPS HDD family, and B&H independently identifies the same model as a 6TB external desktop drive. That gives a concrete high-capacity option for a workstation archive or a large set of working files. Advertised capacity is nominal: the manufacturer notes that accessible capacity is lower after formatting and depends on the operating environment. A single 6TB drive is still one device, so it should not be treated as the only copy of important data. If you need more than 6TB or a multi-drive array, this configuration does not meet that need; no RAID mode is documented in the saved evidence. ([Apricorn datasheet](https://apricorn.com/content/product_pdf/aegis_padlock/dt_usb_3.0_desktop_drive/aegis_padlock_dt_datasheet-2024.pdf), page 2 lines 63–82 and 92–96; [B&H exact-model listing](https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1113453-REG/apricorn_adt_3pl256f_6000_3_5_aegis_6tb_padlock.html/specs), checked 2026-10-14.)
Will its USB connection work with the host?
The manufacturer specifies USB 3.2 Gen 1 and backward compatibility with USB 1 and 2. That supports a newer USB host and a documented older USB path, although an older host constrains the connection to its own generation. The physical connector is less certain: Apricorn's sheet says Type-A, while B&H's exact-model page calls it Type-B. Do not infer the cable shape from the historical Amazon title. Confirm the exact drive port and included cable before relying on the configuration, particularly if your setup needs a specific connector. A listed interface does not prove current operating-system, encryption-management, or host-policy compatibility for a particular computer. ([Apricorn datasheet](https://apricorn.com/content/product_pdf/aegis_padlock/dt_usb_3.0_desktop_drive/aegis_padlock_dt_datasheet-2024.pdf), page 2 lines 63–68; [B&H exact-model listing](https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1113453-REG/apricorn_adt_3pl256f_6000_3_5_aegis_6tb_padlock.html/specs), lines 47–71, checked 2026-10-14.)
Can your desk supply its power?
Apricorn says the Padlock DT requires a separate 12V AC adapter and lists an adapter in its original package. That makes it a poor fit where no outlet is available and means the working setup depends on both a suitable supply and a USB connection. The manufacturer package list does not prove that a current third-party seller will include the original adapter or that a used adapter is in good condition. Confirm the actual package before moving data or planning a fixed installation. ([Apricorn datasheet](https://apricorn.com/content/product_pdf/aegis_padlock/dt_usb_3.0_desktop_drive/aegis_padlock_dt_datasheet-2024.pdf), page 1 lines 30–34 and page 2 lines 71–72 and 92–105, checked 2026-10-14.)
Is the FIPS version required by your policy?
The datasheet lists FIPS 140-2 Level 2 and places ADT-3PL256F-6000 in its HDD FIPS SKU group. B&H also identifies the exact model as Level 2 validated. This can make the model relevant when an organization specifically requires that validation level. It is not a general ranking over the non-FIPS ADT-3PL256-6000: Apricorn states that the FIPS and non-FIPS versions use the same internal components and have equal security levels. Check the current policy and applicable validation records for your intended use instead of assuming every buyer benefits from the FIPS label. The existing finder does not ask about FIPS, so the validation claim belongs in this review and its candidate reason, not in a quiz filter. ([Apricorn datasheet](https://apricorn.com/content/product_pdf/aegis_padlock/dt_usb_3.0_desktop_drive/aegis_padlock_dt_datasheet-2024.pdf), page 1 lines 50–62 and page 2 lines 63–82 and 92–96; [B&H listing](https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1113453-REG/apricorn_adt_3pl256f_6000_3_5_aegis_6tb_padlock.html/specs), lines 47–71, checked 2026-10-14.)
Can the team manage PIN setup and recovery?
The manufacturer's sheet describes an onboard numeric keypad, separate admin and user modes, forced admin-PIN enrollment, and an optional recovery-PIN process. It also documents automatic locking after disconnection or a power interruption, plus configurable controls that can crypto-erase the key after repeated wrong attempts or when a self-destruct PIN is activated. Those controls change day-to-day handling: someone needs to set up the drive before deployment, safeguard administrator credentials, and decide how recovery will work. A PIN-management procedure matters more here than a promise of convenience. The same datasheet says authentication and encryption occur in the device rather than on the host, but that does not establish compatibility with every current IT policy or guarantee recovery if credentials and recovery setup are mishandled. ([Apricorn datasheet](https://apricorn.com/content/product_pdf/aegis_padlock/dt_usb_3.0_desktop_drive/aegis_padlock_dt_datasheet-2024.pdf), page 1 lines 30–49 and page 2 lines 106–171, checked 2026-10-14.)
What should you verify before loading data?
Search for the full ADT-3PL256F-6000 code and confirm the seller is offering the FIPS 6TB HDD, not the same-capacity non-FIPS code or another capacity. Historical ASIN B0BW2WJGS1 remains unverified as a current exact offer. Check the connector and cable because the saved manufacturer and retailer descriptions conflict, and confirm the 12V adapter, current unit condition, return terms, and any organization-specific approval. The saved sources do not establish a current Amazon variant, seller contents, present warranty coverage, a particular host's compatibility, current price, or stock. Keep a separate backup and test the actual unlock, host, and power workflow before entrusting the drive with important files. ([Apricorn datasheet](https://apricorn.com/content/product_pdf/aegis_padlock/dt_usb_3.0_desktop_drive/aegis_padlock_dt_datasheet-2024.pdf); [B&H exact-model listing](https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1113453-REG/apricorn_adt_3pl256f_6000_3_5_aegis_6tb_padlock.html/specs), checked 2026-10-14.)

Before you buy
Is this the same as the non-FIPS 6TB model?
No. Apricorn lists ADT-3PL256F-6000 among FIPS HDD SKUs and ADT-3PL256-6000 among non-FIPS SKUs. Keep the model codes separate.
Does FIPS mean this is more secure for every buyer?
No universal ranking follows from the label. Apricorn says the FIPS and non-FIPS versions have the same internal components and security levels; choose the validated version when your policy requires it.
Can it run from USB power alone?
No. The saved manufacturer datasheet says a 12V AC external supply is required.
Does it support USB 2.0?
Apricorn says the USB 3.2 Gen 1 interface is backward compatible with USB 1 and 2. Confirm the connector and cable on the exact seller offer because the retailer page conflicts with the manufacturer's Type-A wording.
Does historical ASIN B0BW2WJGS1 prove the current Amazon offer is this model?
No. Use the tagged exact-model search and confirm the complete FIPS SKU on the seller's offer.
Where can I check the current price?
Use the Amazon link for current offers. Check the exact model, seller, product condition, delivery, and return terms. This page does not display a live price or confirm stock.
