Our take
The PowerLite S31+ is an Epson classroom and office projector for buyers who need a documented SVGA image and practical wired presentation connections. Epson specifies up to 3,200 lumens of white and color output, but those figures use ISO 21118 and IDMS methods rather than an ANSI label. The projector has no optical zoom, so its lens position must be selected to match the screen. Its USB projection support adds useful room flexibility, while the low native resolution and modest speaker favor slides over detailed movies.
A fixed classroom or office setup for older 4:3 slides, wired computers, and PC-free USB presentation.
It is not for native widescreen detail, a hard ANSI-lumen filter, a close-wall installation, battery travel, or a large home-theater image.
Pros & cons
What could work for you, and what to consider before buying.
What works in its favor
- Epson confirms native 800 × 600 resolution and a 4:3 optical aspect ratio.
- HDMI, VGA, USB-A/B, and USB device projection support several classroom workflows.
- The guide gives projection distances and a one-watt mono speaker specification.
What to weigh up
- The SVGA grid is limited for small text, detailed video, and modern widescreen material.
- The S31+ has no optical zoom, leaving less adjustment after the projector is positioned.
- Its 3,200-lumen output is not labeled ANSI and cannot be compared as an ANSI value.

What the features mean for you
Will a 4:3 SVGA image suit the classroom?
Epson identifies the S31+ panel as native 800 × 600 SVGA and gives its optical aspect ratio as 4:3. That can preserve the proportions of older classroom decks, scanned diagrams, and basic office slides. Newer laptops often present wide layouts, so unused screen area or scaling may appear when their output is shown on a 4:3 surface. Epson’s guide lists compatible input modes, but a compatible signal is not the same as the projector’s native pixel grid. Check the source’s usual aspect ratio and the smallest text viewers need to read before selecting this model.
What do the 3,200-lumen figures establish?
Epson lists up to 3,200 lumens for white and color output in Normal power mode and lower white output in ECO mode. The guide identifies separate measurement standards for those figures; it does not label them ANSI lumens. The matching profile therefore leaves ANSI brightness unknown instead of converting the number. A model rating also cannot tell you the output of a used lamp. Ask to see the unit in the intended image mode and check the lamp-hour screen. The ECO mode can reduce output and fan noise, but it should be judged in the actual classroom lighting.
How does the fixed lens affect installation?
Epson specifies manual focus and no optical zoom on the S31+. Its guide provides distance and image-size ranges, so measure the planned lens-to-screen position before buying a mount or rearranging the room. Digital resizing is not an optical zoom and does not provide the same placement latitude. The guide also documents automatic vertical keystone correction, but digital correction changes image processing and should not replace a centered, square installation when sharpness matters. A stable cart or shelf can work when the throw is measured; ceiling installation requires enough space for airflow and access to the lamp.
Does its connection panel match a presentation routine?
Epson documents HDMI and VGA input alongside USB-A and USB-B functions. A USB storage device can support PC-free files, while USB-B can link to a computer for display and control. These are presentation conveniences, not an integrated app platform. Confirm which file formats the actual guide supports and whether the classroom laptop needs an adapter. The internal speaker is one-watt mono, which may be adequate for a small spoken presentation but is not a basis for assuming room-filling movie audio. A powered external speaker can be connected when sound coverage matters.
What should be checked on an older S31+?
The manual describes a UHE lamp with mode-dependent service estimates, but it cannot reveal how an individual unit was operated. Check lamp hours, filter cleanliness, fan sound, focus at the image edges, USB and HDMI switching, and the remote. Epson notes that lamp brightness can decline over time, so a clear demonstration matters more than the original maximum rating. Verify the exact S31+ label because the same manual covers several PowerLite models with different resolutions, zoom, and connection details. The Amazon link searches the exact model name; it does not promise a particular offer or accessory bundle.
What else to compare
For native WXGA and optical zoom, compare InFocus IN3116; for Full HD movie detail, compare Acer H9500BD, which has a different room and maintenance profile.
Before you buy
What is the PowerLite S31+’s native resolution?
Epson specifies 800 × 600 SVGA with a 4:3 optical aspect ratio.
Are its 3,200-lumen figures ANSI?
No. Epson gives separate white and color output methods, but the S31+ figures are not labeled ANSI.
Does the S31+ have optical zoom?
No. Epson’s guide says it has no optical zoom, so measure placement against the screen before installation.
