Our take
The Epson EB-S31 is a discontinued portable 3LCD projector for simple 4:3 presentation work. Epson lists native SVGA, 3200 lumens of both white and color output, and a conventional 1.45–1.96:1 throw. Its published brightness uses ISO and IDMS methods rather than an ANSI label. The lower resolution and lamp-based design make source format, placement, and actual unit condition important.
A basic training or meeting room with 4:3 documents, measured conventional placement, and legacy VGA or HDMI sources.
It is not a detailed home-cinema, Full HD, ANSI-threshold, or close-wall UST projector.
Pros & cons
What could work for you, and what to consider before buying.
What works in its favor
- Epson documents the exact EB-S31 identity and native 800 × 600 SVGA panel.
- The 1.45–1.96:1 throw and 1.35x digital zoom help plan a conventional classroom setup.
- HDMI, VGA, USB, and optional wireless hardware cover a variety of presentation sources.
What to weigh up
- SVGA resolution is limited for dense text, fine diagrams, and widescreen video.
- The 3200 white/color lumen ratings use ISO and IDMS methods, not ANSI.
- Its UHE lamp and optional wireless unit need condition and bundle checks on used listings.

What the features mean for you
What kinds of slides fit SVGA?
Epson specifies native SVGA at 800 × 600 pixels in a 4:3 image. That can display basic training slides and older computer documents, but fine text and complex diagrams have less space than on XGA, WXGA, or Full HD panels. A high-resolution laptop input will be scaled to the projector's native grid. Review actual slide templates and viewing distances before using it in a large room. The EB-S31's portable form and familiar connection set may fit a replacement job where content is simple and the screen is already 4:3. For film or detailed presentation work, choose a higher-resolution panel.
Can I compare its 3200 lumens with ANSI ratings?
Epson lists 3200 lumens of color light output measured to IDMS 15.4 and 3200 white lumens measured to ISO 21118. The source does not label these as ANSI lumens, so they remain outside the ANSI matcher threshold. That preserves the manufacturer's stated basis and avoids a false conversion. Perceived brightness also depends on image size, lamp condition, picture mode, and ambient light. Ask for a demonstration and lamp-hour count on any used unit. If a comparable ANSI value is essential, select a projector whose exact model data gives one and compare it on that common basis.
How should the throw range affect placement?
Epson gives a 1.45–1.96:1 throw ratio, a 30–350-inch image range, and manual focus. That is conventional projection geometry, so measure the lens-to-screen distance and desired image width before selecting a shelf or ceiling mount. Its 1.35x digital zoom can resize the projected image in software, but it is not optical zoom and does not move the image like lens shift. Digital resizing can reduce effective image area. A room with limited throw distance should compare a true short-throw model instead. The published distance chart helps make the EB-S31 more predictable than a model with no lens data.
Does optional Wi-Fi replace a separate media player?
Epson lists wireless LAN as optional and describes iProjection for network presentations, alongside HDMI, VGA, USB, composite, and S-Video. Optional network projection can help display a computer or document, but it is not the same as native movie apps or a built-in streaming platform. Plan an HDMI source for services that need a streaming stick, and verify the optional wireless module is included if the presentation workflow depends on it. The ports also support older VGA and video devices. This model makes sense for existing workplace gear rather than a self-contained entertainment setup.
What must be checked before buying a used EB-S31?
Epson specifies a 200 W UHE lamp rated for 5000 hours in normal mode and 10,000 in economy mode. Economy lowers light output while extending the model's rated interval; neither value reports remaining lamp life. The product is discontinued, so check service and lamp availability without assuming current stock. Inspect lamp hours, color balance, dust filter, focus, keystone controls, USB, HDMI, and VGA. Wireless support is optional and may be absent from the offer. Choose the EB-S31 when basic 4:3 documents and its throw range fit; choose a higher-resolution modern model for film, small text, or app playback.
What else to compare
Compare Epson Home Cinema 2100 or 2030 for native widescreen Full HD, or an ANSI-rated business model when light output must use a comparable basis.
Before you buy
What native resolution does EB-S31 use?
Epson specifies SVGA with 800 × 600 native panel pixels in a 4:3 format.
Are both 3200-lumen outputs ANSI?
No. Epson uses IDMS 15.4 for color output and ISO 21118 for white output.
Is wireless projection built in?
Epson lists wireless LAN as optional; iProjection is for presentation, not a built-in streaming app platform.
How do I plan its screen distance?
Use Epson's 1.45–1.96:1 throw range and measure from the lens to the screen.
