Our take
Shortlist the S500wi when a room needs an interactive board from a projector mounted close to the wall. Dell documents the 0.3:1 lens, WXGA image, 3,200 ANSI lumens and pen support, making it a distinct classroom tool rather than a general home projector. The optical layout and pen workflow need to be planned together, and used-unit accessories matter.
For a classroom or meeting board that needs interactive writing from a close-mounted projector.
It is not a fit for battery-powered viewing, a portable setup, native Full HD or 4K, or a buyer who expects Wi-Fi to provide streaming apps.
Pros & cons
What could work for you, and what to consider before buying.
What works in its favor
- The 0.3:1 throw places the projector close to the board.
- Dell specifies native WXGA and 3,200 ANSI lumens.
- Interactive pen support is a model feature, not inferred from ordinary Wi-Fi.
What to weigh up
- The lamp and fixed installation need maintenance access and a stable mount.
- Wi-Fi is documented for computer presentation/control, not streaming apps.
- A used package may be missing a pen, mount, software or calibration items.

Full review: how the features affect your choice
What the features mean for you
How close can the projector sit to the board?
Dell gives the S500wi a fixed 0.3:1 ultra-short-throw ratio and specifies 77–100 inch images from about 0.489–0.655 m. That is a very different room plan from a conventional projector behind the audience. Measure the screen width, board height, mount, furniture and clearance before choosing it; a small position error can move the image substantially. The close placement can also reduce shadows from people standing at the board. The fixed lens offers little freedom to correct a poorly measured location, so use the Dell distance guidance for the target image instead of estimating from a product photo.
What makes this an interactive classroom model?
Dell's S500wi sheet identifies an interactive pen function. That matters when a teacher or presenter needs to annotate on the projected image, rather than merely display content from a laptop. Confirm the pen hardware, batteries, software compatibility and calibration process for the exact used unit. A listing for the projector body does not guarantee that every pen or mounting component is included. The feature should be considered together with the close-wall geometry: pen calibration and image alignment depend on a stable installation and the correct board position, not only on the projector's model name.
Does WXGA match your lesson material?
The S500wi's native panel is 1280 × 800 WXGA, a 16:10 format often used with computer-based classroom content. It is not native Full HD, even when a connected computer sends a higher-resolution signal. Dell lists 3,200 ANSI lumens maximum, which is a method-specific figure suitable for comparison with other ANSI-rated products. Actual screen results still depend on mode, lamp life, board size and room light. If students read small charts or video details, plan an appropriate image size and compare a Full HD model when that detail is a priority.
Is Wi-Fi a substitute for a streaming stick?
Dell describes Wi-Fi for computer presentation and control software. That is useful in a managed room but does not establish an onboard streaming-app platform. Keep a laptop, classroom computer or other documented source in the plan, and check network policies before relying on wireless presentation. The sheet lists two 5 W speakers, which may cover a small room but do not define a complete sound system. For video lessons, test the source path, audio routing and any required adapters with the installed equipment rather than interpreting wireless connectivity as a smart-TV feature.
What does a lamp-based interactive setup require?
Dell specifies a 280 W replaceable lamp rated up to 2,500 hours in typical use and 3,000 hours in Eco. Keep a record of lamp hours and replacement history, and allow access to the lamp door and cooling path after mounting. The lamp is not a laser source, and the projector needs an AC outlet. A used classroom package should be checked for the pen, mount, cables and working calibration because a bare projector may not deliver the interaction the buyer expects. Compare its fixed short-throw placement with a standard short-throw model if the room cannot accommodate the specified board distance.
Compare for your needs
The ViewSonic PS600W offers 0.49:1 short throw but no standard interactive pen package; its ViewSonic pages also conflict on rated output. The S500wi has a closer 0.3:1 lens and documented pen function, but requires its interactive components and lamp to be checked.

Before you buy
Does the S500wi have interactive pens?
Dell's model-specific sheet documents an interactive pen function; verify the pen hardware and calibration accessories in the particular used package.
Is the 3,200-lumen figure ANSI?
Yes. Dell labels the S500wi maximum output as 3,200 ANSI lumens in its product sheet.
Do its Wi-Fi features mean it runs streaming apps?
Dell describes Wi-Fi for presentation and control, not an onboard streaming platform, so use a documented external source.
