Assessment scenario: Earlier open earbuds with no ANC and IPX4 earbuds-only

An editorial assessment scenario for comparing earlier open-fit, no-ANC references whose earbuds specifically carry IPX4. This is not a statement of the visitor’s intent and does not imply water protection for the case or immersion suitability.

Why consider this model?

  • Sony’s model-specific guide and U.S. support record identify an open-ring design without a sealed canal tip; Sony support states that WF-L900 does not support active noise cancellation.
  • Sony rates the earbud units IPX4 while explicitly saying that the charging case is not water resistant. The feature therefore meets the questionnaire’s named earbuds-only boundary without transferring the rating to the case.
  • Sony documents five fitting-supporter sizes and later firmware 4.2.1 support for two-device connections; these are identity/setup facts, not evidence of personal comfort or a combined LC3-multipoint mode.

Tradeoffs to weigh

  • The open ring offers no sealed-tip isolation or ANC. A source description cannot predict personal fit, ambient awareness or suitability for a particular workplace or road environment.
  • The 5-hour SBC and 5.5-hour AAC music maxima are separate Classic Audio plans. Sony’s current U.S. specification also lists LC3, but the inspected guide gives no LC3 runtime; the maximum must not be transferred to LC3 or firmware-updated multipoint use.
  • IPX4 belongs to the earbuds only; the case is not water resistant. The documentation does not authorize swimming, submersion, showering or charging wet contacts.
  • Wireless charging for this exact case remains unverified. No result should be inferred from its USB-C port or supplied cable.
  • Retail listings identify White WFL900/W and Dark Gray WFL900/H, but new-condition listings were unavailable when checked. No present stock, used-item battery condition, complete box, warranty or seller support is represented.
