Decide whether presets match your recipes

Start with the temperatures on the tea you actually buy. The controls provide 160, 175, 185, 190, 200, and 212°F. If those settings cover your routine, buttons reduce the number of choices you make each morning. If you regularly need 140°F or a setting between buttons, the limitation is fundamental: selecting the closest preset is a compromise, not exact matching. The finder therefore separates a low starting temperature from freely adjustable control.

The useful feature is what happens after pouring

Cuisinart documents a 30-minute keep-warm cycle and up to two minutes away from the base before standby. Return the kettle within that window and the previous heating or holding cycle resumes. That suits someone pouring a cup and immediately putting the kettle back. It does not mean two minutes of heating while unplugged. With the boil preset, keep warm operates just below boiling; use the manual’s restart procedure when you need another rolling boil.

Capacity and placement are separate decisions

The maximum fill is 1.7 L. Think in terms of your actual mug or teapot size rather than a universal number of cups. A larger maximum does not require a full kettle every time, and it does not tell us how comfortable a full lift will feel. Cuisinart lists a 9.75-inch height, but the lid still needs room to open. A cabinet clearance equal to the closed height is not enough information to approve the placement.

Read the controls, not a temperature screen

The handle has preset indicators and the body has a water-level window. Neither is a live numerical water-temperature display, and there is no selectable Celsius display in the documented controls. That is fine for a repeated button-based routine; it is less useful if you like watching water approach a custom target. The ordinary spout also serves a different purpose from a narrow gooseneck, so this is not our match for a required gooseneck design.

Cleaning and material expectations

The main body is stainless steel; that description does not establish an entirely metal water-contact path. The scale filter is removable, while mineral buildup inside still needs periodic descaling according to water hardness and use. These are separate maintenance tasks. Cuisinart calls the lid easy-open, but that wording alone does not confirm damped soft opening. We leave that attribute unverified rather than turning a convenient lid button into a stronger claim.

This review covers BKE820XL, not the similarly named BKE830XL. The linked US manual labels the capacity 1.8 L and shows an 1800 maximum fill mark. Breville’s current product headline calls it seven cups; we use the manual’s volume instead of converting that rounded headline into liters. Check the model and fill markings on the item offered to you, particularly when sellers group nearby versions on one shopping page.

Five choices are useful only if they are your choices

The documented settings are 175, 185, 195, 200, and 212°F. The 195°F option differs from the Cuisinart’s 190°F button, while Cuisinart also offers 160°F. Neither preset layout is inherently better for everyone: compare your recipe with the actual controls. A selected setpoint is not evidence of laboratory accuracy, and we have not measured temperature stability, heat-up time, or the quality of the resulting drink.

Understand the 20-minute hold before buying

Keep warm can hold the selected setting for 20 minutes, but choosing boil results in an approximately 200°F hold rather than continuous boiling. The manual also says removing the kettle from its base during this mode switches it off. Someone returning for a second cup needs to account for that interaction. If automatic resumption after a brief pour is your priority, Cuisinart’s documented two-minute memory is the more direct match.

The lid is the stronger reason to prefer this design

Breville explicitly identifies a soft-opening lid. That is a more specific design feature than a generic lid-release button, though we have not measured how it feels in use. The main body is brushed stainless steel; the description does not prove that every water-contact component is steel. Its regular spout is also not a gooseneck. If controlled gooseneck pouring is mandatory, this model should leave your shortlist regardless of its other conveniences.

Plan for the controls and cleaning routine

Preset buttons and illuminated indicators communicate the selected program; they do not provide a live numeric temperature or selectable Celsius screen. Breville lists a 9.8-inch height on its current US product page. Allow additional access above it for the lid, and follow the manual when cleaning the removable filter or descaling the kettle. A scale filter and a clean heating chamber solve different maintenance problems; neither eliminates the other task.

OXO documents a 104–212°F selection range using a dial. That allows you to choose a recipe’s temperature instead of working around a short list of presets. It is especially relevant when your target is below 160°F, outside both other models’ documented ranges. Adjustable control is a capability, not an independent accuracy test: we have not measured overshoot, stability, or the difference between the displayed temperature and water in a poured cup.

The screen supports a different way of brewing

The manual documents actual water temperature on the display while heating and a way to switch between Fahrenheit and Celsius. This helps someone follow recipes written in either unit without doing a conversion for every use. If you only press boil and walk away, the screen may add little to your routine. Think about which information you would actually check during brewing, rather than choosing a screen simply because it looks more technical.

Holding time does not answer every workflow question

The kettle heats and holds for up to 30 minutes before switching off. That can suit an unhurried tea session, but we did not find a documented off-base time window that guarantees automatic resumption. We therefore leave that fact unknown. If automatic resume after pouring is non-negotiable, select that requirement in the finder and inspect the verification result rather than assuming every kettle with keep warm behaves like Cuisinart.

Check which OXO kettle you are actually buying

The model here is 8716900: a 1.75 L kettle with a borosilicate-glass main body and a conventional spout. It is distinct from the 8717100 pour-over model. The documented materials also include silicone and stainless steel, so a glass body should not be read as an all-glass or plastic-free water path. Choose by the exact model and the pouring design you need; a familiar brand name alone cannot establish that fit.

Cleaning access is clearer than the size listing

The manual identifies a soft-opening lid and a removable filter. Filter cleaning and descaling remain separate tasks; visible mineral deposits are a reason to consult the maintenance instructions, not proof the filter has failed. The product page lists three dimensions without identifying their axes clearly enough for our height check. We leave height unverified.
